India, Spain commit cooperation in fight against terrorism

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described terrorism as a challenge to the humanity and stressed that India and Spain should work together to deal with this emerging global challenge.

"Thank you Germany! My visit has led to very positive outcomes in terms of furthering the close ties India and Germany enjoy", Modi said in his goodbye message as he left for Spain on the second leg of his four-nation tour which will then cover Russian Federation and end in France.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the first Indian prime minister to visit Spain since 1992, met the European country's top leaders and they stressed that states and entities which encourage, support, finance terrorism, provide sanctuary to terrorists and glorify terrorism should be subjected to worldwide laws including restrictive measures. "We want the European Union to become stronger and India will play a positive role towards that through the medium of Germany", Modi said.

In 2014, Russian Federation and India signed the 'strategic vision for strengthening cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy. The US should provide leadership in this crucial area.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in the 18th India-Russia Annual Summit.

Modi, who arrived in Spain late on Tuesday (May 30) from Germany, his first stop on a four-nation Europe tour, was scheduled to meet with King Felipe VI later on Wednesday. Particularly, India's participation as Partner country in the Hannover Fair has given a big boost to Indo-German partnership. After the summit, Putin will also reportedly host the prime minister at a private dinner in St Petersburg. He is going at an opportune moment as US President Donald Trump has moved out of Europe causing hard feelings in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries. India and Russian Federation will celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

Amidst concerns over growing proximity between Russian Federation and Pakistan, India said today its relation with Moscow is on a "different pedestal" and there is a clear understanding of each other's "core concerns" and vital security interests. Having welcomed him and after thanking him for making his visit to Spain, Rajoy announced the signing of a document to serve as a guide to develop "relations at a political, security, economic, scientific and technology level".
