Harry Kane's injury-time equaliser spared England's embarrassment after Scotland threatened to secure a dramatic victory in their World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park.

England had been the better side throughout the game, but two late Leigh Griffiths free kicks put Scotland on course for a shock victory, before Kane intervened.

"It (the goal) is definitely up at the top, it was a special day", Kane said.

"To score that goal was great as it has been a while since I have scored for England".

By that stage England had cleared their heads of any early uncertainty and they had enough of the ball in promising positions that, by half-time, Southgate was entitled to be frustrated there were only sporadic occasions when they managed to get behind Scotland's often congested defence.

"We could have had maybe a four versus two going up the field and we could have just killed the game off", said the Hull City defender.

Former England captain Terry Butcher believes Joe Hart should no longer be the country's first choice goalkeeper.

"I want to play, I want to play every game", said Kane.

The England forward explained his main influences as skipper had come from Wayne Rooney - captain when Kane first broke into the national team - and his Spurs team-mate Hugo Lloris, who he should come face-to-face with in Paris tomorrow night during the friendly with France.

"The objective is to qualify and we're top of the group". "You have to expect the unexpected and we were 2-1 down from nowhere, but we found another gear".

"I think it was an important moment for the team, important moment individually for Harry", Southgate said.

"Slovakia away (0-3) and Lithuania at home (1-1) were disappointing performances, we are not hiding away from that". I have a steady mind and I know my ambitions, I know what I want to do, and this team has great ambition.

Scotland keeper Gordon accentuated the positives from a thrilling encounter, saying: "It is still a point and we probably would have taken that before the start".

"Scotland is no easy place to come, and especially when you are 2-1 down in stoppage time, it makes it that much sweeter".

"It was a game we should win and were in total control of, but two moments of brilliant quality from them turned it on its head in seconds", he said on ITV1.

Scotland hero Griffiths was left "gutted" despite scoring a brace of free-kicks for his first goals in the dark blue. "If you look at the fixtures we've got, we're capable of winning them all if we can perform like that".

"It's all to play for and don't rule us out".

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal as Paul Simpson's side defeated Venezuela 1-0 in South Korea, earning England their first World Cup win since 1966.
