Jury selection enters 2nd day in Bill Cosby sex assault case

The lawyers studied each person's race, sex, age, occupation and interests to try to guess their inherent sympathies, experts said.

Cosby, 79, is charged with three counts of felony aggravated indecent assault from a 2004 case involving Andrea Constand, an employee at his alma mater, Temple University. He has called the encounter consensual. In this combination of file photos, entertainer Bill Cosby pauses during an interview in Washington on November 6, 2014, and Andrea Constand poses for a photo i.

The jury pool is being drawn here because of concerns raised by Cosby's defence team that it would be hard to find open-minded jurors in Montgomery County, near Philadelphia, where he has a home and where the trial is scheduled to start on June 5 in Norristown. But jury selection gets underway Monday in Pittsburgh.

Cosby, in an interview last week, said race could be a motivating factor in the accusations against him.

Jurors can not not be excluded on the basis of race or gender, and McMonagle said that prosecutors had used challenges to remove two black women while accepting white jurors who gave similar answers to questions. Cosby says his wife has "never" waivered in her support.

A Pennsylvania judge on Monday will begin questioning potential jurors for the rape trial of Bill Cosby, the comedian best known as America's favorite TV dad before dozens of women came forward to accuse him of sex abuse.

One-third of the potential jurors questioned Monday said they've formed opinions about Cosby's guilt or innocence, while the majority said it would be hard to spend several weeks sequestered across the state.

Two of the men selected on Monday said either they themselves or people close to them have been the victims of a sexual assault.

Prosecutors will be looking for any jurors who show signs of being Cosby fans. Court officials said Judge Steven O'Neill had taken the bench.

Cosby arrived in court on the arm of an aide, using a cane and carrying a box of tissues, and frequently conferred with his three lawyers at the defense table.

Asked if he thought Cosby, who has pleaded not guilty, could get an impartial jury, he said, "We sure hope so".

The defense has used four of its seven strikes. Each side can strike an additional seven people during jury selection and three more after alternatives are picked.

The case is being heard in a suburb of Philadelphia, but jury selection is taking place in Pittsburgh because of the massive publicity the case received in its home district, Nootbaar reports. "And I don't feel her say anything", he said.

More than 50 women have accused Cosby of similar acts, but Constand's was the only case to spawn criminal charges.

The defense wanted to be present Constand's civil suit against Cosby in an effort to portray her as motivated by money.

One-third of the 100 people questioned Monday say someone close to them is a sexual assault victim.

More than 100 potential jurors will be called. The first group consisted of 53 women and 47 men, with 16 people of color.

Cosby was arrested on December 30, 2015, days before the 12-year statute of limitations expired.

But he has pleaded not guilty and is now free on a $1m bail.

He told a talk radio host last week that he hopes to clear his name and resume his career as a writer and performer.

"I just don't want to sit there and have to figure out what I believe is a truthful answer as to whether or not I'm opening a can of something", he said.
