Lobbyist shot is expected to make full recovery

"We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over last 36 hours".

Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Sava said.

Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

Sava said that, while Scalise remains in critical condition, his risk of death is substantially lower now than when he came in.

A congressman said Hodgkinson asked him whether it was the Democratic or Republican team practicing before he carried out the shooting.

Scalise was among several people wounded when a rifle-wielding attacker fired on lawmakers on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington.

The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said.

Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a GOP lawmaker baseball practice Wednesday morning.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Griner, who was also shot, is in the hospital in good condition and spirits after a gunshot wound to the ankle, Sava said Friday.

But Scalise still faces multiple surgeries, a prolonged hospital stay and a lengthy recovery, Sava stressed. The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL.

Scalise, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, congressional aide Zach Barth and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were shot during an attack on the Republican congressional baseball team as it practiced Wednesday morning.

Hodgkinson's wife told media members this week that she was shocked by the actions of her estranged husband. Scalise's Capitol Police detail, two officers of whom were among the injured, has been credited with saving the lives of many present.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that it continues to process evidence and "to assess the potential motivations of the single shooter".

This is according to a person familiar with the case who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press Saturday on condition of anonymity.
