Macron criticizes Russian media for "attempted meddling" in French election

Monday's meeting comes in the wake of the Group of Seven's summit over the weekend where relations with Russian Federation were part of the agenda, making Macron the first Western leader to speak to Putin after the talks.

Emerging from the two-hour meeting, Macron and Putin vowed to improve the strained relations between their countries, while admitting to disagreements during talks described by Macron as "extremely frank".

In an apparent jab at French President Macron, who has accused RT and Sputnik of false reporting, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has invited Macron to come "search for truth" in Russia's southern republic, and bring Germany's Angela Merkel along with him.

The 28-nation European Union bloc and the United States imposed sanctions on Russian Federation after Moscow annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and then backed separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Amnesty International France vice president Cecile Coudriou says "it's important that Mr. Putin is ready to hear, we hope, strong words coming from Mr. Macron, to say "stop" to that homophobia which has lasted for too long". He also said that usage of Chemical Weapons would draw immediate response from France which is already fighting terrorism in its own soil.

"The Russian President also said he fully agrees with the 'red line" presented by Macron, who said that France would respond to any chemical attack in Syria, whoever the author is.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has dismissed allegations of Russian meddling in last year's USA presidential election as "fiction" invented by Democrats to divert the blame for their defeat.

In Versailles, he and Macron inaugurated an exhibition marking the visit of Russia's modernising tsar Peter the Great to Versailles in 1717.

Macron said he also spoke to Putin about LGBT rights in Chechnya and about NGOs in Russian Federation.

Emmanuel Macron trounced Marine Le Pen in the French presidential election a few weeks ago, and he's making his mark across the globe already.

While Putin did not dispute any of Macron's statements, he also did not mention gay people even just once throughout the press conference. "We disagree on a number of things but at least we discussed them", Macron said. At the time, the Kremlin said it had no confirmation of any gay men suffering abuse in the region.

"According to our information, there is no evidence al-Assad forces used chemical weapons".

Their first meeting since Macron took office provided another test of the Frenchman's diplomatic skills after his memorable vice-grip handshake last week with US President Donald Trump.

The Kremlin has denied involvement, and Putin on Monday reiterated that Russian Federation never meddled in the French election.

During the campaign, which climaxed with Macron's election on May 7, Macron's camp irritated the Kremlin by saying its campaign's networks, databases and sites had come under attack from locations inside Russian Federation.

Putin later visited a new Orthodox cathedral complex in central Paris.
