May could lose majority in United Kingdom parliament - YouGov study in The Times

A failure to win the June 8 election with a large majority would weaken Prime Minister May just as formal Brexit talks are due to begin, while the loss of her majority in parliament would pitch British politics into turmoil. The latest modeling indicates that the Conservatives might lose as many as 20 seats of the 330 it now holds while the Labour Party might gain as many as 30 seats.

According to global internet-based market research firm YouGov, Theresa May's Conservative Party could miss out on an overall majority in Parliament by 16 seats following the General Election on June 8th.

Sterling plunged in the wake of a YouGov poll showing that Mrs May's once commanding lead had been wiped out and the Conservatives would fall short of the required seats for an overall majority.

Last week we reported that Labour was only 5 points behind the Conservatives, but at the time there was no sure way of knowing how this would transfer to seats in parliament.

'At this late stage of the United Kingdom election campaign, the pollsters are more dividend on the size of the Conservative party's lead that at any other time during the election, ' she said.

YouGov said May was still the most favoured choice for prime minister, though her 43 percent rating is the lowest it has ever been.

"The only poll that matters is the one that's going to take place on June 8", she said on a campaign visit to Plymouth in southwest England. It's now much more plausible that Labour might be elected, which doesn't appear to be spooking traders as much as some thought it might.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks during a Q&A at Cross Manufacturing Company in Odd Down in Bath, Britain, May 31, 2017.

Labour would get 257 seats, up from 229, the Liberal Democrats 10, up from the nine Tim Farron's party held when the election was called, the SNP 50, the Greens one and Plaid Cymru three.

The analysis is based on a complex model and suggests Mrs May's gamble of calling a snap election in the hope of a landslide win could backfire spectacularly.

The gap between Labour and the Tories has narrowed to just three points, a new poll suggests.

An ICM poll for the Guardian on Tuesday put the Conservatives 12 points ahead.

Michael Ashcroft, a former Conservative Party donor who funds polling, uses the same types of modelling as YouGov but came up with a very different estimate of the election: May winning 396 seats and Corbyn winning 180 seats.

The Times admits in its report that the YouGov poll "allows for a wide margin of error" and "suggests that the Tories could get as many as 345 seats on a good night, 15 more than at present".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the manifesto would create a "war between generations" if implemented.
