Merkel says EU is 'ready to start Brexit negotiations'

Theresa May had repeatedly said during the election campaign that the Brexit talks would start 11 days after the June 8 vote, using it as a warning that Jeremy Corbyn's Labour were not ready for the negotiations.

"The EU stands ready to begin negotiations".

"There's a stark gap between what businesses want and expect from our post-Brexit immigration system and what the government has pledged to deliver", said Stephen Clarke, policy analyst at the Resolution Foundation.

Michel Barnier, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, indicated on Twitter that the European Union was prepared to show some patience, making it clear that talks should not begin until the political situation had settled in the UK.

With talks between the Tories and the DUP expected to begin within days, Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey expressed concern about the impact of any deal on the peace process.

She added that Britain will still remain in Europe after Brexit, and that she wanted the country to remain a good partner. But on Brexit, Mrs May's stated reason for holding a vote, little has changed for Brussels and the 27 other governments of the European Union.

Angela Merkel has said she assumes Britain will stick to its Brexit negotiation plan after the shock election result.

But in a catastrophic setback, the bet failed and she lost her overall majority. However, that timeline now looks optimistic after May suffered an unexpected electoral debacle last week, when she saw her party's majority wiped out at an election she did not need to call.

Angela Merkel has said Brexit negotiations should go ahead as scheduled in nine days' time - despite the United Kingdom being plunged into political turmoil by the General Election.

The news comes after Ms Merkel said the negotiations should go ahead as scheduled, despite the uncertainty caused by the UK's General Election resulting in a hung Parliament. Her predecessor, David Cameron, first asked British voters to decide in 2016 whether to leave the EU.

After the election result, European Council president Donald Tusk warned Britain might end up with no deal on its withdrawal arrangements or future trade if it did not open negotiations in time.

Firms are being urged to step up their preparations for Brexit after a new study found that employers are "totally unprepared" for a fall in migration once Britain leaves the EU. "Let's put our minds together on striking a deal", Barnier, who called last month for a June 19 start date, said on Twitter. But because Corbyn will not be prime minister, a fundamental rethink of Brexit is unfortunately unlikely. "That's going to make it hard for the European Union 27 because they're going to want to know who they're talking to and what their policy is".
