Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been stood down from riding after reportedly testing positive to a banned substance

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has tested positive to a banned substance and been stood down from racing pending the outcome of an inquiry.

The 31-year-old shot to global fame in 2015 when she won the Melbourne Cup, Australia's richest and most famous horse race, on Prince of Penzance.

Payne is yet to comment, but has been requested to attend the inquiry on Thursday.

Phentermine is an appetite suppressant with pharmacology similar to amphetamine.

The substance is banned in accordance with Australian Rule of Racing 81B.

The sample was provided by Payne, 31, at the Swan Hill Cup meeting in Victoria. The races were both horses' first rides.

She revealed a year ago that moving into training was the next step in her career, and that her personal goal was to both train and ride a Melbourne Cup victor.

After she rocketed into the wider public consciousness with her Melbourne Cup victory - after which she delivered her famous "everyone else can get stuffed" line - Payne got her trainers licence.

Payne has only just returned to Australia after she rode Kaspersky into fifth place in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on 20 June.
