Mourners pack funeral for slain Muslim teen

The girl's body was found in a pond some distance away.

Fairfax County Police Department said on Monday night that Hassanen's murder was most likely a "road rage incident" and not a hate crime. Police say they believe Martinez Torres acted alone and say they are not looking for other suspects. Investigating the murders, police determined that what happened to them was the result of nothing more than a "parking dispute".

Torres allegedly argued with one of the boys in Hassanen's group before he chased them with a baseball bat an caught up to Hassanen, who he assaulted.

"His anger over the encounter led to violence when he hit Nabra with a baseball bat", police said.

At least, this is what the police say.

Others highlighted the surge of anti-Muslim crimes and the rise of Islamophobia worldwide in recent years, also pointing to Monday's attack in north London's Finsbury Park, in which a man drove a van into a group of people leaving Ramadan prayers at a nearby mosque. On Monday ICE lodged a detainer on the suspect, ICE spokesperson Carissa Cutrell said.

About 5,000 mourners left their cars as traffic overflowed and walked more than a mile to reach Wednesday's funeral for 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen whose beating death has some in her community fearing for their safety.

Many outside observers are skeptical of the police's conclusion, especially Muslims who say the case looks much like a hate crime.

Police say they've found nothing to indicate that the victim was targeted for her religion.

A group gathered in Dupont Circle to remember 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

It was "road rage" that killed NabraHassanen. She said he briefly attended school in the United States and had no prior connection to Hassanen.

The attack has some people fearful because these are the last days of Ramadan, when many spend their nights praying at mosques. Nabra's father, Mohmoud Hassanen Aboras, noted that his daughter's best friends were Hispanic Christians.

Dranesville Road, which was largely empty when an attacker beat Nabra there on early Sunday morning, was packed with people walking along the same sidewalk to attend her funeral.

The police investigation will include a review into whether Ms. Hassanen was sexually assaulted during the attack, Tawny Wright, a Fairfax County police spokeswoman, said on Tuesday. He says "this community will not forget this young lady or her family". Darwin Martinez Torres of Sterling has been charged with the girl's killing.

WRC-TV in Washington reported that when the man got out of his vehicle, the girls ran away and didn't realize until later that the victim wasn't with them.

The number of hate crimes in the US - and fatalities resulting from them - has skyrocketed since the election of President Donald Trump.

The public defender's office, which was appointed to represent Martinez Torres, declined to comment.

Martinez Torres is now held without bond at the Fairfax County juvenile court.

Hassanen's funeral prayer service will be held at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Center in Sterling on Wednesday, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Police searched for hours before finding Nabra's body at around 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said the girl had been participating in overnight activities at a religious institution.

Even so, they continue to investigate the case and would revise their initial assessment if evidence of a hate crime is found, they said.
