Mungall applauds historic NDP-Green agreement

With a deal for unity around confidence measures between the NDP and Greens giving them a slim majority if it holds, Premier Christy Clark announced on Tuesday that she would reconvene the Legislature as soon as possible and face a confidence vote nearly immediately.

The Liberals have 43 seats (one shy of a majority); the NDP have 41; and the Green Party holds the balance of power with three seats.

Clark intends to test her government in the Legislature before the end of June, a test she expects to lose.

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark takes part in a news conference in Ottawa on December 9, 2016.

Horgan and Weaver took questions from reporters following the signing, with the NDP leader saying it was an exciting time for democracy in B.C. Both leaders said they were excited to work together on a variety of issues, including addressing affordability.

"We can have a stable minority government for four years with the support of B.C. Green MLAs on confidence and supply matters", Weaver said.

"If I were a betting man, I'd say the chances (of the throne speech being approved) are not good but if a change in government needs to occur, it needs to occur in the House and not two people making an agreement in a backroom", said Eric Foster, Vernon-Monashee MLA, of Horgan and Green leader Andrew Weaver.

"It's pretty obvious that if the Greens and the NDP are two peas in the same pod and they've got a deal", Rustad said.

However, exactly what the parties have agreed to, beyond the Greens supporting the NDP on confidence and budget bills for the next four years, remains unclear.

They gave it to a representative for Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon.

"Quite honestly the province of B.C. can't grow exclusively on the basis of escalating housing prices in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland".

"BCUC doesn't have the skills or the depth to do a review, so they're going to be hiring all the same type of people that we hired to do the review", Rustad said.

Horgan and Weaver both thanked Clark for facing the house in a timely manner, with the Green leader describing her response to the NDP-Green agreement as "very gracious".

"The challenge here is to demonstrate to British Columbians, as we are today, that people from different political persuasions can come together in the interest of British Columbians so people don't fear minority governments, in fact, they embrace them", Horgan said.

"I believe passionately in this institution", Horgan said.

"We specifically did not ask for there to be a coalition", said Weaver.

The Greens and NDP have supported a system of proportional representation that accounts for the number of seats each party gets in the legislature based on their percentage of the popular vote.

Despite a campaign promise to introduce electoral reform, Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party defeated the motion Wednesday. "We want to talk through that and hear quite clearly from the federal government why it is that they're ignoring these aspects of rights and title". It is likely that she will turn first to Christy Clark's Liberals, who won the most seats.
