Murray, Wawrinka into French Open last 16

ANDY Murray will measure himself against one of the best of the next generation in the fourth round of the French Open.

Andy Murray benefited from a double-fault by Juan Martin del Potro in the opening tiebreaker and then looked more and more like the No. 1 player that he is during a 7-6 (8), 7-5, 6-0 victory at the French Open on Saturday.

Murray won a gripping 84-minute opening set on his way to a 7-6 (10-8) 7-5 6-0 victory over the Argentinian on Saturday. After losing to Murray in the first round, Del Potro showed a moment of emotion as he smacked his racquet angrily and slumped on the net before resuming the second round.

"It was a very good first set and I was a bit hesitant, but after that I relaxed", Wawrinka said. "I have been playing great, great points during the whole first set", said Del Potro.

Del Potro lauded Murray's adjustments - new returning angles, more and more leg-sapping drop shots, even attacking the 6-foot-6 (1.98-meter) Argentine's forehand - as the match wore on, saying: "Andy is one of the smartest guys on the circuit, and he knew what my weak points were". "It's irrelevant. What's relevant is what happens, you know, during the points".

Stan Wawrinka reached the French Open quarterfinals for the fourth time after beating Gael Monfils 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-2.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco also continued his upset run, ousting No. 22 Pablo Cuevas 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. The first set was the highlight of the whole tournament - tennis players battled for nearly half an hour, and the best was Murray who had to play a few set-Bolov.

"To be playing him this early on in the slam is not easy, but it can be a very positive thing", Murray said to The Guardian. I didn't come here with the mindset that I'm definitely going to go a long way here.

Del Potro, playing in Paris for the first time in 5 years after a series of wrist injuries, was quickly a break down in the second set.

He had two set points at 5-3 before Murray clawed it back level by converting his sixth break point.

This time Murray would make no mistake and crunched it out with his fourth ace of the match.

"In the matches here I think I've been more switched on".

Murray and Del Potro met in two classic encounters a year ago.

He saved a set point at 4-5 and then another in a memorable 10th game, missing a sitter forehand before finally breaking back.

The third-round match between a pair of past major champions was much tighter than the straight-set scoreline might indicate.

Meanwhile, in the women's singles, Romania's third-seeded Simona Halep advanced to the fourth round, where she will compete with Spanish Carla Suarez for a place in the quarter-finals, reports Efe. "I mean, I did all that I could, it wasn't my day", the Pole said.

Another prospectively enjoyable contest will see Marin Cilic take on Feliciano Lopez, first up on Suzanne Lenglen court.

She will now face Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro for a place in the quarter-finals after the number 21 seed claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Elena Vesnina of Russian Federation. The Frenchmen meet for the 14th time with Monfils 7-6 up.
