N. Korea Conducted Missile Test in Anju, not Pukchang

South Korea's military said Tuesday, May 23, 2017, it fired warning shots at an unidentified object flying south from rival North Korea. In January 2016, South Korea said its military fired 20 machine gun warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly crossed the border.

US experts, however, are reportedly wary about claims that the medium-range ballistic missile, which North Korea dubbed the Pukguksong-2, meets the technical requirements to be mass produced.

The United Nations Security Council is set to meet Tuesday morning to discuss North Korea's recent actions, including the Sunday missile test. That missile travelled about 500 kilometres before crashing into the sea, according to South Korean and USA officials.

The South's military said North Korea may have dispatched the object in order to test South Korea's military preparedness.

North Korea, which is working on a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States mainland, has defied all calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programmes, even from its lone major ally China.

The border between the two countries is the most heavily armed in the entire world, with the two countries clashing on occasion.

US President Donald Trump has warned that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea is possible if Pyongyang won't change its ways.

However, there are reports that suggest that North Korea is still capable of launching nuclear warheads that could cross the Pacific Ocean and reach the United States.

Rodong Sinmun, the official daily of the ruling Workers' Party, published dozens of colour photos of Sunday's Pukguksong 2 missile launch, including several pictures of the Earth taken from a high altitude (the missile reached a maximum altitude of 560 km), Efe news reported.

"The president said we are leaving open the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, but we should sternly deal with a provocation to prevent North Korea from miscalculating".

The US-drafted statement was issued ahead of a closed-door council meeting set for Tuesday on the request of the United States, Japan and South Korea.

North Korea has recently bolstered its drone program, with drone attack drills on simulated targets in the South carried out.

The latest missile tested uses solid fuel that allows for immediate firing, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said.

The current status quo of worldwide sanctions, diplomatic isolation and military deterrence has failed to halt or even slow North Korea's nuclear advance, Litwak said. North Korea's latest missile testing has got the entire world anxious over the plan ahead to avoid a nuclear war.

Last year, a North Korean unmanned aerial vehicle breached the military demarcation line and flew over South Korea's territory.
