Officials to discuss condition of officer stabbed at Flint airport

The attack that injured Lt. Jeff Neville was being investigated as an act of terrorism, but authorities said they have no indication that the suspect, Amor Ftouhi, was involved in a "wider plot". The blade just missed Neville's main blood vessel to the brain by millimeters, doctors reported.

According to authorities, Ftouhi entered Flint's airport at 8:52 a.m. Wednesday, carrying a red duffel bag and a dark satchel bag.

A detention hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28 at United States District Court for the Eastern District of MI courthouse.

David P. Gelios, Special Agent in Charge, Detroit Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, speak during a news conference in Detroit, Thursday, June 22, 2017.

When Neville got to the hospital, he had a 12-inch laceration that extended from near the front of his throat to the back of his neck and went as high as his jaw, the doctor said. He is now in stable condition at Hurley Medical Center in Flint.

Doctors said Neville should be released from the hospital in the next 24 to 48 hours. "The slash was probably very, very close to severing his major arteries and nerve — perhaps even his windpipe and digestive systems". "This was not a shaving nick".

"This was a significant force", Scholten said.

Neville was stabbed in the neck Wednesday at Bishop International Airport in Flint, about 50 miles (80.46 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.

Ftouhi, who holds duel Tunisian and Canadian citizenship, attempted to purchase a gun in the USA but was unsuccessful, according to Special Agent David Gelios of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The serrated knife that Ftouhi used in the attack was purchased in the U.S., Gelios said.

Gelios said Ftouhi "continued to exclaim "Allah" and he made a statement to the effect of, "You killed people in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan" and 'We're all going to die'". At the moment, Ftouhi remains in federal custody where he is being held on a charge of violence at an global airport, a 20-year felony. Acting U.S. Attorney Dan Lemisch said more charges are coming in the days ahead.

Neville fought off Ftouhi and was helped within seconds by others in the airport.

He also says investigators believed Ftouhi is a "lone wolf" attacker.

Fluent in French, Ftouhi is a married father of three who worked as a trucker until two weeks ago and called Canada his home the last 10 years.

Court officials said he had no history of drug or alcohol abuse or mental health issues.

Police in Canada were searching a Montreal apartment.

Ftouhi legally entered the U.S.in Lake Champlain, New York, on June 16, and later traveled to Flint, Gelios said.

A criminal complaint against him says Ftouhi questioned why police did not kill him.
