Penn Station LIRR riders to be 'fairly compensated'

The reduced fare will also apply to riders traveling to Long Island City in Queens and Nostrand Avenue and East New York in Brooklyn, according to the MTA.

The MTA says it will give a fare reduction to Long Island Rail Road riders while Amtrak does fix work at Penn Station this summer. And while Amtrak's track work will not affect the subways, numerous other problems will, barring a stunning reversal of the system's worsening performance.

The discount will be in effect from July 10 until Amtrak finishes the repairs, MTA officials said. Per the New York Daily News, Cuomo has asked the MTA to consider those discounts since many commuters will be taking diverted routes-through Brooklyn's Atlantic Terminal and Queens's Jamaica Station-for the duration of the repairs.

And people who use the L say they should be compensated for their troubles, too.

The West End Concourse Expansion completes the first phase of the transformational Pennsylvania Station-Farley Complex announced by Governor Cuomo in September 2016 to redevelop the Farley Building, creating a new 255,000 square foot Train Hall to house passenger facilities for the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak.

Cuomo has already ordered the MTA to speed up fix work on several regional bridges and tunnels in anticipation of additional vehicular traffic during the Amtrak fix project. A final agreement on the $1.6 billion redevelopment of the Penn-Farley Complex allowing for major construction to begin has been reached.

At an Long Island Rail Road Committee meeting Monday, LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski spoke about the importance of getting customers to commute to alternative stations so as to reduce the potential for crowding on trains to and from Penn Station, which will be operating with three fewer tracks throughout the summer. The work is largely expected to take place during the business week, at all hours.

The summer of hell at Penn Station just got slightly cheaper for LIRR riders.

Commuters have been bracing for a tough summer as Amtrak is scheduled to spend eight weeks fixing equipment inside the station.
