Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will hold negotiations at the U.S. Department of Defense and will meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during his ongoing working visit to Washington, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly said.

President Trump meets with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the Oval Office of the White House on Tuesday.

With the Ukrainian leader sitting by his side, Trump said it was a "great honor" to meet Poroshenko and that "a lot of progress has been made" in the US relationship with Ukraine.

Although the issues to be discussed at the meeting are officially unknown, Ukrainian sources mentioned as main issues the conflict in eastern Ukraine, bilateral cooperation and aid to reforms in the European nation by the Trump Executive. And a meeting with State Secretary Tillerson is also planned today. Paul Manafort, the former head of Trump's campaign, did lobbying work with President Viktor Yanukovych, the former president of Ukraine who has been critical of Poroshenko's handling of Russia's efforts to annex Ukrainian territory.

Trump has found himself on the defensive politically over investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election and possible ties between his campaign and Russian officials.

"The President has begun a day in Washington with a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Energy, and the next talks will be in the White House", Tsegolko wrote.

On Monday, Russia threatened to shoot down U.S. warplanes over Syria after a U.S. Navy fighter shot down a Syrian warplane.

The new sanctions on Russian Federation announced by the Treasury came after the U.S. Senate passed legislation last week that would impose new measures against Russian Federation and limit Trump's ability to roll back sanctions against that country in the future.

White House statements on Poroshenko's meeting with both Trump and Pence made no mention of Russian Federation.

Since Russia's military entry into Ukraine, the United States has put Russia under sanctions and relations between the two super powers have deteriorated.

But less than a month later, the president hosted top Russian diplomats in a closed-door Oval Office meeting that suggested relations weren't so bad after all.
