Prison escapees busted by elderly couple

Authorities confirmed Thursday that two men who were arrested earlier in the day in Tennessee after tying up and robbing a couple there were the two Georgia escapees who were wanted for killing two Georgia corrections officers. "We need help out here quick. hurry!" The couple were able to untie themselves later and call police. Both are being sought by law enforcement. After fleeing on foot, the men were eventually held at gunpoint by a homeowner whose vehicle they were trying to steal.

"I'll say they weren't injured but I can assure you they were traumatized by these hoodlums coming into their home".

Likewise, Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Greg Dozier said in a press release, "We are relieved to know that these two unsafe individuals have been taken off the streets, and the public is out of harm's way".

The homeowner on Pruitt Road saw Donnie Rowe, 43, and Ricky DuBose, 24, attempting to steal a auto from his home.

Tennessee authorities took the men into custody.

Authorities launched a nationwide manhunt Tuesday for Dubose and Rowe after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said they fatally shot two guards on a prison transport bus before carjacking their way to freedom.

The prisoners surrendered in the driveway of Patrick Hale, a married 35-year-old man with a young daughter.

Donnie Russell Rowe and Ricky Dubose reportedly broke free from a prison transport bus on Tuesday morning and overpowered the guarding officers onboard, taking their weapons and killing them.

After 60-plus hours in the wind, escaped inmates Ricky Dubose and Donnie Rowe were captured Thursday evening in Rutherford County, Tennessee.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles says the two men held an elderly couple captive in their home, then took the couple's vehicle and led police on a auto chase and foot chase.

Authorities do not know whether Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose are still in Georgia or still traveling together, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told reporters Wednesday.

Traffic remains backed up for several miles on Interstate 24 East in Murfreesboro as investigators remain on the scene.

"Earlier tonight, with the assistance of our law enforcement partners in Tennessee, risky fugitives were captured and taken into custody", said Deal.

Sills thanked the Rutherford and Bedford County sheriff's offices and all local and federal agencies that worked to apprehend the men. "We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service".

The vehicle was stolen between 11 p.m. and midnight Tuesday about 12 hours after the inmates ransacked a house 9 miles away to gather food and change out of their prison uniforms, according to the Associated Press.

The minutes that preceded their escape are still under investigation, but police say the two somehow got out of what should have been a locked, gated rear section of the bus.

Word of the arrests came as the families of the corrections officers, Christopher Monica, 42, and Curtis Billue, 58, were planning their funerals. A reward for tips leading to their capture rose to at least $130,000. Monica had worked for the facility for almost eight years after being hired in October of 2009.

Rowe, 43, was serving life without parole for a 2001 armed robbery in Bibb County.
