Nicaragua balked because it found the deal's standards insufficient. "The EU is still committed to collectively mobilize $100 billion toward activities related to climate change in developing countries by 2020, but in order to achieve that goal, all donor countries will need to work for it and an important role will be played by private sector funding", he said. Even a direct appeal from the Vatican wasn't enough to persuade the president.

"While Trump tries to isolate the United States from these opportunities, Europe, China and India are moving ahead with building clean-energy economies, ditching climate-trashing fossil fuels and creating jobs".

Trump is stuck on China and India in particular. Standing in the heart of Europe, Trump publicly lectured NATO partners about their military commitments and offered no explicit endorsement for the collective defence agreement at the core of trans-Atlantic security for decades.

Trump did little to quell those concerns Thursday. Long a skeptic of climate change-calling it a "hoax" propagated by the Chinese to suppress United States manufacturing-this is the latest, and perhaps most significant, action taken by Trump under his "America First" doctrine, calling the agreement unfair to American workers and the economic impacts of "draconian".

"It's better Trump is outside the agreement rather than pulling it down from the inside", added Mohamed Adow of Christian Aid, which lobbies for poor country interests at the two-decade-old United Nations climate negotiations. "As someone who cares deeply about the environment, which I do", the president said during the press conference, "I can not in good conscience support a deal that punishes the United States, which is what it does". Trump now wants to reverse this under the garb of protecting American jobs.

"Undoubtedly the withdrawal of the USA from the Paris Agreement is regrettable - after all, the United States is the second biggest polluter in the world", Pomerants told BNS on Friday.

Trump allies say the president is merely trying to follow through on his campaign promises, but others see missed opportunities to broaden the appeal of a Republican president who lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton and whose job approval hovers around 40 percent. Trump consigns himself to a tiny minority of climate-change deniers and rump failed states.

"The bulk of the decisions which drive USA climate action in the aggregate are made by cities, states, businesses, and civil society", he wrote. They both appeared on Fox News.

Our mission has always been to leave the world better than we found it.

Fortunately, the rest of the world seems ready to go on without him.

But, fear not! Trump and his corporate polluting cronies may want you to think that this decision will bring worldwide climate action to a screeching halt, but the Agreement will move forward with or without Trump.

Somewhat bizarrely, Pruitt also said he did not discuss the threat of climate change with Trump when making the decision to pull out of the Paris agreement. France, Germany and Italy quickly issued a joint statement Thursday saying the Paris climate accord can't be renegotiated. Lack of leadership in this area from the US government does not mean lack of leadership from the American people, organizations or companies.

Given what is going on in Washington D.C. with the current US administration, he said, "it is imperative that China succeeds". Our withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord is a forfeiture of that leadership and undermines our ability to shape the solutions to this global challenge. The United States has done so multiple times in the past, the most famous case being that of the treaty to create the League of Nations, for which President Woodrow Wilson advocated but Congress refused to ratify.

To be sure, it wasn't Macron himself who posted that edit of the White House video.
