Roger Federer routs Alexander Zverev to win ninth Halle title

Roger Federer has reached yet another final this year at the Gerry Weber Open and is set to take on rising German Alexander Zverev as both men look to win their fourth title of the year.

Prior to Sunday's final, Halle already represented the happiest of hunting grounds for the 18-time grand slam champion; Federer has won more tournaments in the German city than any other.

The Stuttgart defeat was the first time Federer had lost his opening match at a grass-court tournament since 2002 Wimbledon.

The former World No. 1 continued powerful and made use of break chances in the 6th game to ensure the 4-2 lead in the second set.

The Swiss top seed, bidding for an historic ninth title at the grass venue whose stadium and ground are styled after Wimbledon, needed four match points over two games to advance to the final four on Friday, securing victory through a forehand victor after 66 minutes.

On the forthcoming clash with Federer, Zverev said, "Well, it's a final".

The World Number Five won the Australian Open - his first Grand Slam success in five years - in January despite not playing in the previous six months.

The 35-year-old lured Khachanov to the net on several occasions, including at 4-4 in the second set and the Russian dumped a forehand volley into the net to give Federer two break points.

This is going to be a fun match between these two talented players, as Zverev is growing up before our eyes and Federer is, well, Federer. At 35, the Swiss player became the oldest victor of the grass-court tournament. "He could have been a little nicer to me", Zverev said. It was his ninth title at Halle, and the shortest of his 11 finals. "I'll prepare myself the best I can, but he's definitely the favourite in that match".
