Sessions is appearing before Senate Intel Committee: What could happen?

One the cabinet members present Attorney General Jeff Sessions, will publicly testify before the Senate Intel Committee about his various meetings with Russians while serving as a member of Trump's transition team.

During his televised testimony on Thursday, Comey that Sessions, a former senator from Alabama, may have had additional contacts with Russians, and said in a closed hearing that investigators had received Russian intercepts detailing a possible third meeting between Sessions and Kislyak, CNN reported.

Members of the Intelligence Committee said they wanted Mr. Sessions to recount what happened during and after the February 14 Oval Office meeting where, according to Mr. Comey, President Trump pressured him to drop the F.B.I. investigation into Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser. White House spokesman Sean Spicer declined to say that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence. Republican Senator James Lankford, a member of the intelligence panel, said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that decision had not been finalized, but, "I assume that this will be public". "It'd be very good to get it directly from him". "So I am inviting him to come testify and we could work that out". Lawmakers, including Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate and to determine if Sessions committed perjury.

Several Republicans said on Sunday that while Mr. Trump's request was troubling, it was not criminal.

"My father felt very vindicated, and all the statements he's been making and feels incredibly optimistic", the first daughter said on "Fox and Friends". "So this looks more like an inappropriate conversation than obstruction".

Comey seemed to suggest during his testimony that Sessions had an undisclosed Russian Federation issue that would have led to his eventual recusal from the investigation.

Sessions recused himself from the inquiry in March after media reports that he had been in two previously undisclosed meetings a year ago with Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

Trump has been coy about whether any recordings exist of his private conversations with Comey, who was sacked by the president in May.

"How does that fit in with his recusal?" "No more game playing", Schumer said.

JOHNSON: Yeah. The attorneys general for Washington, D.C., and Maryland tell The Washington Post they're planning to sue the president for violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, that language that says the president can't accept gifts from foreign governments, though state AGs say they're in a better position to sue than some private actors because the convention centers in their states are actually losing out to Trump hotels and Trump resorts. The Attorney General had originally agreed to testify this week before the Senate and House Subcommittees about the Justice Department 2018 budget.
