Several injured in London after reports of vehicle ramming pedestrians

A member of emergency services and forensic officers works on a road near Finsbury Park station after a vehicle struck pedestrians in north London, Monday, June 19, 2017.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said: "This is being treated as a terrorist attack".

One man died and 10 others were injured after the attack, which police are treating as terrorism.

Police said they were called just after 12:20 a.m. (2320 GMT) to reports of a collision on Seven Sisters Road, which runs through the Finsbury Park area of the city.

It unfolded as a man was receiving first aid from members of the public in an unrelated incident.

May says the man who plowed a van into a crowd of people leaving evening prayers acted alone and that people outside the mosque apprehended him. I tried to speak with the police to know about their situation. He was bleeding. My friend said he had to lift the van.

- Extra officers have been deployed to "reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan", according to London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Police said eight people had been taken to three separate hospitals and two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Witnesses said a crowd of worshippers had gathered to help an elderly man who collapsed on the ground at a nearby bus stop when the vehicle suddenly appeared.

Finsbury Park mosque has a historic association with extremism and once had convicted terrorist Abu Hamza as its imam, though it has since reformed.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will chair an emergency meeting Monday morning following a van crash in which a man died at the scene. Several of those taken to the hospital were listed as "seriously injured". She said her thoughts were with the injured, their loved ones and emergency officials who responded to the incident.

Dr Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress added: "We condemn this attack and its attempt to escalate tensions in the United Kingdom and we stand firmly beside our Muslim brothers and sisters in the aftermath of this attack".

Police, including armed officers, could be seen manning a wide cordon around the area, while others searched the area with sniffer dogs.

- Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, said he is "shocked by this horrific and cruel attack" and appealed "for people and the media to remain calm and respectful of those affected". Monday's attack marks the third time in the space of three months that a van has been deliberately used to kill pedestrians, following the Westminster Bridge attack in March and last week's London Bridge assault earlier this month.

He added that it had "all the hallmarks" of a terrorist attack.

Police have not offered any details about the cause of the crash. Images from the scene show a white van wedged against a traffic barrier at the end of a dead end street. The suspect - clean-shaven and wearing a white shirt - is seen struggling for purchase as the crowd tries to restrain him. The video of the crash early Monday morning was accessed by the AP.

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Athman, told AFP: "People were screaming: "It's a terrorist attack, it's an attack, this guy attacked us", and I had to run back and tried to save people who were still alive and giving water, helping the police". They are investigating the crash as suspected terrorism.

He said: "The leader of the mosque said "You do not touch him". No one! No one!"
