South Korean leader proposes Asian nations co-host 2030 World Cup

South Korean President Moon Jae-in proposed today that Northeast Asian countries co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup to ease tensions in the region.

According to the president's spokesman, Moon Jae-In spoke with Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino and suggested that a number of north-east Asian countries could unite to host the showpiece, including North Korea.

Moon, who suggested during his successful campaign for a May 9 election that he could try to renegotiate the deal, also said the two countries should not "cling to past history" only to block other developments in their ties.

Since taking office last month, Moon's government has been seeking to expand cross-border exchanges as a way to improve strained ties over the North's nuclear and missile programs.

North Korea has made two appearances at the World Cup, 1966 and 2010.

Speaking at an event attended by a group of South Korean lawmakers on a trip to the southwestern city of Mokpo, Nikai also expressed hope for the two countries to "get along well" and not to have relations tangled with "trivial matters".

The two nations now sit either side of the world's most heavily-fortified border since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty - meaning that technically the two countries are still at war.

In a speech marking South Korea's Memorial Day last Tuesday, President Moon honored national heroes and veterans, including those who fought in the Vietnam War.

Nearly all of the hermit state's national team play for clubs in North Korea, given the difficulties of escaping the communist kingdom.

There is a precedent for such an arrangement, with Japan and South Korea jointly hosting the tournament in 2002.

'I hope this can happen with the 2030 FIFA World Cup'.

One thug, who leads Zenit St Petersburg's Landscrona mob, warned: "You think it was bad in France - wait until Russian Federation". The FIFA President visited the country for the Under-20 World Cup.

The sweltering heat, tough alcohol laws and a lack of footballing history are among the major reasons why Qatar's bid to host the World Cup is mired in controversy.
