Summerville's spelling champ falters in third preliminary round at national bee

As an adult woman who still can't remember the proper spelling of the word "occasionally" and had to type "recommendation" out three times before getting it right, I salute this young woman's poise and skill.

She competed in the national bee three times from 2012 to 2014.

"I'm so happy I got the chance to represent our region nationally", said Fatta.

The New Carlisle, IN native says the competition itself is great, but it is the memories offstage that she will cherish. She also is in the Washington, D.C., area the same week as several of her La Conner Middle School classmates and plans to meet up with them.

The second day, she attended a barbecue at Nationals Park, and on Tuesday, she participated in the preliminaries.

Hailey R. Jinkins admitted she was a little frustrated as the bell dinged at the end of her spelling attempt Wednesday afternoon, which eliminated her from the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Grace Jones was one of the first to spell Wednesday.

More than 11 million youths competed in earlier spelling bees in all 50 USA states, U.S. territories from Puerto Rico to Guam, and several nations, from Jamaica to Japan, contest officials said.

Fuller, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was just five years old when she qualified for the bee in March.

The competition for the spelling specialists, age six to 15, concludes with finals on Thursday.

A West Branch student took an early exit in the preliminary section of the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee in the nation's capital. The Charlotte eighth-grader breezed through the preliminary rounds of the bee Wednesday, correctly spelling "sorbitol" and "conveyance" to become one of 40 students vying for the championship in the final round Thursday. "Ishreet aspires to work at NASA as a scientist, and she would eventually like to make her mark on a planet besides Earth". He loves trying to spell complicated words by breaking them down and trying to put them together like a puzzle.

"I'm proud. It's been really cool to do that", said Stephens.
