It was the second time this month that the US has shot down an armed drone in the vicinity of the camp at Tanf.

The downing of the Syrian jet by us forces came on the same day when Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps launched several midrange missiles from inside Iran at targets in Syria, several media outlets reported citing the Iran military.

An armed pro-Syrian regime drone was shot down late Monday night by a U.S. Air Force F-15E fighter jet after the drone was detected approaching U.S. military forces in southeastern Syria.

"We have said before that demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces towards coalition partner forces in Syria that are conducting legitimate counter-Isis operations in Syria, will not be tolerated", Davis said.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford says that the USA is looking to reestablish its hotline with the Russian military as relates to deconfliction efforts in Syria.

In addition to downing the Syrian jet near Raqqa, the US has also fired on Syrian government forces in the east on three occasions in just the last month.

The U.N. children's agency says the European Union has donated 90 million euros ($100.3 million) that will help provide critical services and support to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

Iranian officials threatened more strikes. Israel also is concerned about Iran's missiles and has deployed a multilayered missile-defense system.

Aron Lund, also a fellow at the Century Foundation, said that even though Russian Federation and the USA may not be interested in an escalation, it is not a given that they can help their allies in Syria avoid it.

This is the first time that Iran has fired missiles outside of its own territory in 30 years.

On Sunday, Iran lobbed ballistic missiles at IS targets in eastern Syria, the first such attack it has carried out anywhere since at least 2001.

The United States has responded forcefully to Russia's threat to treat USA -led coalition planes in the skies over Syria as targets, as tensions escalate in the 6-year Syrian conflict.

The U.S. also has special operations forces and advisers embedded with the SDF, raising the stakes in the fight for the northern city.

Meantime, the downing of the Syrian government jet Sunday follows Trump's decision to launch a Tomahawk missile strike against a military base of Assad in April, which was in blamed on the regime.

SDF spokesman Talal Sillo said the government wants to thwart the SDF offensive to capture Raqqa. Associated Press writers Nasser Karimi in Tehran and Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, contributed.
