Theresa May to meet with backbench Tory MPs after election fallout

In June 8 election the Conservatives won 318 of the 650 House of Commons seats, 12 fewer than the party had before the snap election, and eight short of the 326 needed for an outright majority. She named her Cabinet Sunday, keeping most of the ministers in their posts and even appointing an old adversary, Michael Gove, to the post of environment secretary. However, with almost all votes counted, the Conservatives are on 315 seats, short of the 326 mark that ensures a majority. Instead, Mrs. May has turned to Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party and is believed to have struck a deal whereby the DUP will provide support to her party to enable it to pass legislation in the Commons.

It follows the resignations of her co-chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill whose abrasive style upset ministers and who were blamed by many in the party for the abysmal election campaign.

Her Downing Street office initially announced on Saturday that the "principles of an outline agreement" had been agreed with the DUP, only for the smaller party to contradict that account hours later.

With media asking questions about whether May could remain at Downing Street after her electoral humiliation, ministers said now was not the time for the further uncertainty that a party leadership contest would bring.

He said: "I am backing Theresa May".

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson brushed off claims he was plotting a fresh leadership bid, insisting that he fully supported the Prime Minister.

Economically, the DUP are very similar to the Conservatives in wanting to increase the Personal Tax Allowance and the National Living Wage, both important for those of you with the horrific possibility of going off into the "real world" after graduating.

While the prime minister fought to win the support she needs to stay in power, she still told German Chancellor Angela Merkel she plans to start Brexit talks on schedule in a couple of weeks.

The 10 DUP MPs could prove crucial in supporting the Conservatives on key votes after Thursday's election saw Mrs May lose control of the Commons.

Jeremy Corbyn vowed to lead Britain out of the European Union as he insisted Labour is "ready any time" for another general election.

"I can still be prime minister", Corbyn tells the Sunday Mirror. But not for some time, let's get this clear. While the parties are closely aligned they differ on issues such as pensions and the details of Britain's exit from the European Union. However, Gunther Oettinger, the EU's budget commissioner, told German radio he was unsure the Brexit negotiations could begin on time, and that having Britain as a weak negotiating partner could result in "a poor outcome".

Davidson and the 13 Scottish Conservative MPs are travelling to Westminster Monday to underline their significance: without these seats May would have no chance of forming a government with anyone.
