Trump attacks Germany in furious tweets

United States President Donald Trump called Germany's trade and spending policies "very bad" on Tuesday (May 30), intensifying a row between the longtime allies and immediately earning himself the moniker "destroyer of Western values" from a leading German politician. Gerhard Schroeder refused to back the US invasion of Iraq in 2002, going on to win that year's German election.

The sharp words from Gabriel came after Trump concluded his first official tour overseas which took him to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Brussels and then Italy for a G7 summit, the German website Local.de reported.

Merkel made the comments to reporters after a meeting in Berlin with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom she called a "reliable partner".

The relationship between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel is "fairly unbelievable", the White House has said.

Germany's Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel also criticised President Trump on Monday, accusing him of "short sighted policies which stand against the European Union and are weakening the West". She was prompted to make it by Trump's failure to endorse a number of common security and economic positions, most notably the core North Atlantic Treaty Organisation doctrine of collective defence, which has only ever been invoked after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., or to maintain USA commitment to the Paris climate accord. "We Europeans must fight for more climate protection, fewer weapons and against religious (fanaticism), otherwise the Middle East and Africa will be further destabilized". That's what I experienced over the past several days...

Trump's rants have not gone unnoticed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. After hosting Modi, Merkel is due to meet with Chinese Premier Le Keqiang on Thursday.

But if there's one thing we've learned throughout Merkel's near-12 years in office, it's to take her at her word.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says it would be a "crime" to spoil the environment for future generations as the world awaits a decision on US climate policy.

Trump has dropped his "NATO is obsolete" talk, aims to boost United States defense spending in Europe by 40 percent and has sent fresh forces to the frontline Baltics to counter the Russian threat. Under the pact, the United States committed to reducing its emissions by 26 to 28 percent from 2005 levels by 2025. "But the importance we put on these ties can not mean that we abandon fundamental principles such as our commitment to fight climate change and in favor of open societies and free trade", he said.
