A jury has acquitted Tulsa police Officer Betty Jo Shelby, who killed unarmed motorist Terence Crutcher in an encounter that was captured on video by a police helicopter last September.

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler, who charged Shelby with first-degree manslaughter in the heat of passion on September 22, has argued that Shelby, who is white, unreasonably shot Crutcher, who was black, out of fear.

Following the verdict, Shelby made a silent exit as Crutcher's family members tearfully left the courtroom.

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office said that Crutcher had the hallucinogenic drug PCP in his bloodstream at the time of his death, a condition it described as "acute phencyclidine (PCP) intoxication".

However, the Crutcher family's lawyer, rejected her reasoning, saying that video from the killing shows Crutcher was "simply going to the auto with his hands up, and making the turn and pivoting to put his hands on the vehicle when the shot is fired".

A lawyer for Shelby said the officer was "elated" that the jury found her not guilty.

She was later charged with manslaughter in the death of Crutcher and her trial ended this week with the jury finding her not guilty.

In another video filmed inside a police auto, Mr Crutcher was seen walking away from officers and toward his vehicle with his hands up before he approached the door on the driver's side. "Betty Shelby was following him with his hands up". "No justice, no peace, no racist police!".

Shelby told the jury she believed Crutcher may have been reaching into the vehicle through a partially open window in search of a weapon.

The family of Terence Crutcher burst into tears and expressed outrage after the verdict. For several seconds an officer is seen following Mr. Crutcher from behind with a gun trained on him.

"When is it going to stop - just officer-related shootings?"

Shelby testified Monday that she feared for her life and thought Crutcher was reaching inside his stalled SUV for a gun.

Tiffany Crutcher, the twin sister of Terrence Crutcher, said her brother's hands were up, that he was not an imminent threat or attack her and didn't deserve to be shot. She also had harsh words for a police officer in the helicopter who can be heard on an audio recording inexplicably saying that Mr. Crutcher "looks like a bad dude too". "So in the end, he caused his own".

Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Gray asked.

"Let it be known that I believe in my heart that Betty Shelby got away with murder", added Terance's father Joseph.
