Faith in the United States and confidence in its president has collapsed around the world since the election of Donald Trump, new data published by the Pew Research Centre confirms. At the end of Barack Obama's presidency, he had the confidence of 83 per cent of Canadians.

Only 22 percent of more than 40,000 respondents from 37 countries had confidence in Trump doing the right thing regarding world affairs; 64 percent felt that way about Barack Obama at the end of his presidency.

US President Donald Trump and his policies are broadly unpopular around the world - with the notable exceptions of Russian Federation and Israel, according to a poll released Monday.

When it comes to specific personal characteristics, 75 percent of the survey's participants saw Trump as arrogant, 65 percent viewed him as intolerant, and 62 percent felt that he's risky.

According to the data collected from 37 nations across the globe, confidence in the USA president's policies and character has dropped significantly, especially in nations with close relations to the United States, like Europe and Asia. In Canada and Germany, favorability ratings slid by 22 points, to 43 percent and 35 percent, respectively. The change marked the first time since the final year of George W. Bush's presidency in 2008 that the public in these European countries has expressed more unfavorable than favorable views of the USA, the survey found. Domestic polls had registered a severe dip in Germans' trust of the U.S. as a partner months ago.

China's Xi Jinping (28 per cent) and Russia's Vladimir Putin (27 per cent) also get poor marks, though neither is rated as negatively as Trump.

Consider recent developments with newly-minted French President Emmanuel Macron, embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is facing a potentially tough re-election campaign.

Trump's favorability ratings were lowest in Mexico, at only 5 percent, at 7 percent.

The survey also noted that Trump is not the only world leader in whom global public lack confidence.

But around 41 percent of Russians now say they have a favorable view of the USA, up from 15 percent at the end of the Obama era.

In an October 2015 report, Pew stated that Canadians often disagree with the USA over key issues such as pipelines and trade deals, but that hadn't led to much lower favourability. On the other hand, 55 percent see him as a strong leader, while 39 percent say that he is charismatic.

Poll respondents disapproved of all five Trump policies they were asked about, including the US-Mexico border wall and withdrawal from trade agreements. He also disappointed European and other leaders by refusing to recommit to a landmark climate agreement that the US and other nations had agreed to in 2015.

But it's what's going on inside the White House that has the image of the United States and its leader in serious question. According to the research, Americans are still being well-regarded by other countries, adding that 58 percent have a favorable opinion of them.

The survey also took a closer look at Israeli attitudes towards the USA, finding that Israel has consistently given the United States some of its highest favorability ratings, with 81% in 2017 saying that they have a positive view of the US.
