White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer walks from the West Wing to watch U.S. President Donald Trump depart to spend the weekend at his New Jersey golf estate from the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, U.S. June 9, 2017.

The Twitter spat comes as USA media reported the White House is considering moving Mr Spicer to a more senior communications role.

"It's no secret we have had a couple vacancies, including our communications director who has been gone for a while". [We've] been seeking input from individuals as far as ideas they may have.

In his almost five months on the job, Spicer has become something of a punching bag for Trump, who notably excluded the devout Catholic from a meeting with the Pope.

Spicer said he had "seen the reports" from the intelligence community concluding that the Russian government ordered an influence campaign to interfere with the USA election, but that he has not asked Trump about his views. "When we have an announcement of a personal nature, we'll let you know", he said.

Discussions about overhauling the White House communications office have been ongoing for several weeks, according to administration officials.

Reporters that cover the White House have grown frustrated by the fewer number of briefings, which have traditionally been held daily and on-camera.

President Donald Trump's spokesman said he hasn't asked his boss whether he believes the Russian government interfered in the 2016 presidential election, the consensus view of the US intelligence community.

Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon addressed the reports that Sean Spicer's role in the White House might be changing, with Spicer stepping away from the daily press briefings.

Going through the various rumors about Spicer's possible exit and replacements, Colbert was amused that one possibility is the job will be filled by multiple candidates rotating in order to avoid Trump getting angry or bored with the person in the position. As per Politico and Bloomberg, the White House is reevaluating Spicer's role.

Spicer made the comments during an appearance on the right-wing Laura Ingraham Show.

There's more than one way to kill a briefing.

He has been the subject of recurring skits by comic Melissa McCarthy on "Saturday Night Live" and his afternoon briefings have garnered strong ratings.

The reason Spicer has stopped doing press briefings is that he's "gotten fatter", Steve Bannon texted a reporter.
