White police officer shoots off-duty black officer in St Louis

The African American officer, who has not yet been identified, came outside of his home while off-duty after hearing the commotion from a vehicle chase that ended nearby.

Officers were chasing three men in a stolen white sedan when the vehicle crashed on Wednesday night, forcing the three occupants to flee and sparking a shootout with police, according tp the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Two officers ordered him to the ground, and he complied.

A black off-duty police officer was wounded after being shot when he stepped outside of his home to assist in response to a stolen vehicle crashing in his neighborhood, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday. They tried to stop the vehicle with spike strips and three people in the auto fired shots at officers. When the three suspects noticed the officers, they drove away.

A second suspect was arrested at the scene.

The police department as of Saturday hadn't disclosed the names of the officers, who have been placed on routine administrative leave as the matter is investigated. His attorney, Rufus Tate Jr., says the shooting is a "real problem", Fox 2 reports.

A third policeman arrived and, misreading the situation, fired his weapon, hitting the off duty officer in the arm.

The man, who has been a cop for 11 years, was sent to hospital but released yesterday.

At Barnes-Jewish Hospital early Thursday, Interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole told reporters the off-duty officer had come out of his home to help after the stolen vehicle crashed nearby, and was hit in the crossfire between officers and suspects who had been in the auto.

The officer was injured in the arm and was sent to a hospital in St Louis, Missouri. "We can see this is a real problem".

Now the lawyer of the 38-year-old wounded officer has said the case shows there is "this perception that a black man is automatically feared". He had just finished his shift, and had his service weapon out, chasing a man who had broken into his auto, police said.

"This been a national discussion for the past two years". He is listed as in good condition.

The investigation remains ongoing, Jackson said. It's not clear if he was hit by the officers' or the suspects' gunfire.

Officers took on the Carolinas' only wheelchair softball team to raise money for and empower people with disabilities.
