Wonder Woman Crushes The Mummy At The Box Office

This reboot starring Tom Cruise was supposed to help launch a "Dark Universe" - à la Marvel's gold mine of movies - but it was dead on arrival here in North America.

Highlighting the current advantage enjoyed by comic-book crimefighters was the sophomore-weekend success of WB/DC's "Wonder Woman".

"Early projections had revealed that "#The Mummy" will gross something from $40 to $60 million in its opening weekend, while "#Wonder Woman" would make over $45 million in its opening weekend.

The first entry to the new monster universe is not being received warmly by critics because it failed to scare or excite the audience.

Because studios ultimately generate the most profits from ticket sales in the US and other Western nations, though, "The Mummy" may not be as profitable as films that perform better domestically. Put it this way - The Scorpion King made $36 million on its opening weekend, and that was a spinoff of the Brendan Fraser series. The cold audience reaction probably means that the Universal film will miss the $100 million mark domestically, as a final total around $80 to $85 million seems more likely.

The Mummy comprised almost 40 percent of all screenings in China throughout the weekend. But instead of falling prey to the curse of the DC Extended Universe, Wonder Woman remained strong. Only getting a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes didn't help so much either compared to the stellar reviews "Wonder Woman" has rightfully earned.

The heavily hyped entry in Universal's new "Dark Universe" franchise fared better internationally, however, where it is projected to earn just under $142 million in its first weekend of release. In total, the movie has grossed $174 million in its opening weekend.

China led the charge with a spectacular $52.2 million launch, followed by South Korea with $17.8 million, Russian Federation with $7.8 million, Mexico with $5.1 million, and Taiwan with $4.9 million. Johnny Depp signed up to play the Invisible Man, and Javier Bardem will play Frankenstein's Monster.

The good news is that the film had a solid global box office.

Universal execs said, the Mummy's ultimate financial standing will largely depend on its foreign showing. Beauty and The Beast director will take on the role of director for the Bride Of Frankenstein. The top 12 films this weekend grossed $138 million, down about 5% from the same frame a year ago.

The rest of the top 5 has Pirates of the Caribbean 5 at number 3 with $45 million, Baywatch at number 4 with $15 million and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie at number 5 with $14 million. The movie debuted in Russian Federation on Thursday as well and took in $1.6 million, also the biggest first day ever there, too. It sold a modest $6 million in tickets in its debut.
