The 20-year-old Dutchman required emergency ambulance treatment on the field during a meeting with Werder Bremen in Zillertal, Austria and he was subsequently airlifted to hospital.

Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has suffered serious and permanent brain damage after he collapsed during Saturday's friendly against Werder Bremen, the Eredivisie club have confirmed.

"Ajax are deeply saddened by the news that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent brain damage", a brief statement on Twitter read.

The club added that "recovery chances of these crucial brain functions are nil".

Ajax reported earlier this week that early tests showed his heart to be functioning normally and a brain scan at that time showed "no anomalies".

It is expected that he will be flown to an Amsterdam hospital shortly for further care, the club said.

But the club "received really bad news" on Thursday.

Most likely due to insufficient oxygen supply after his collapse his brain was damaged.

"We feel enormously for his parents, siblings and other relatives".

They added: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones in this hard time".

The Amsterdam-born youngster is highly thought of at Ajax, having made his debut at the start of last season. This is a huge blow for Ajax, even if we knew this scenario was a possibility. These were uncertain days, in which a lot of people sympathized in different ways. Last season he was chosen as best player in the Jupiler League, where he played with Jong Ajax.

"Abdelhak is such a great talent, but unfortunately we will never know how far this star would have reached".

The tragedy comes just after the death of 30-year-old Ivorian worldwide Cheick Tiote, who died in China in early June after collapsing during training with second-tier club Beijing Enterprises.
