As Exports Grow, China Defends Trade With Sanctions-Hit North Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the trade relationship between the two Asian nations and is now questioning whether Beijing is really doing its part on neutralizing North Korean threat.

The two-day summit in Hamburg, Germany, wrapped up Saturday with a declaration that made no mention of North Korea, even though the meetings came just a few days after the regime test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile created to hit the continental U.S.

Among the blacklisted officials is the head of North Korea's overseas spying operations, senior members of North Korea's Workers' Party, and heads of trading firms that have funded North Korea's military program.

The U.N. sanctions do not include goods intended for ordinary people and those for humanitarian reasons. However, North Korean exports increased by 29.1 percent to $1.67 billion.

Moreover, China is pushing trades with areas not included in the United Nations sanctions.

Reuters heard from two senior usa officials that are working to propose sanctions to "initially hit Chinese entities considered "low-hanging fruit, ' including smaller financial institutions and 'shell" companies linked to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs", but would also "leave larger Chinese banks untouched for now". The country even suspended imports of coal back in February.

Since his appointment in March 2016, the special rapporteur has called on North Korea to allow him to gather first-hand information in the country, but he has not been granted access.

"... Security Council sanctions against the DPRK do not constitute an embargo", said Ambassador Cui, at the 7th U.S. Still, after meeting with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit on July 8, Trump tweeted they'd had had an "excellent" meeting on trade and North Korea.

The bill is meant "to stop North Korea and prevent nuclear war", he said, pointing to recent news reports on an increase in China's trade with its wayward, isolated neighbor despite the UNSC sanctions. "It's high time for the United States to maximize global economic pressure against Kim Jong Un's regime as well as against the many foreign banks and foreign companies that are enabling it, especially in China".
