Ataribox May Be the Company's SNES Classic or Its Ouya

The Ataribox Looks Fittingly Retro Yet Sleek

Gaming company Atari shared some images of the new Ataribox console in a message to fans on Monday (which we saw via The Verge) as well as some details about its spec sheet.

Unfortunately, few other details are available at present, but we do know the new console will have a HDMI port, four USB ports and an SD card slot.

Classic Atari games that could be making a return on the Ataribox include Pac-Man, Pong, Space Invaders and Asteroids.

But Atari have done things the other way round and now the only thing we really know about the Ataribox (yes, that's really what it's called) is that the case looks really cool.

Still, whatever the Ataribox ends up being, the one definite takeaway is that it'll certainly look nice on your mantelpiece, or wherever the hell it is that you keep your games consoles.

Atari's last official console-the ill-fated Atari Jaguar-was marketed as the first 64-bit console at a time when consoles had only just gone 32-bit.

According to the newsletter, Atari's objective is to create a new product that stays true to its heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari. The new Ataribox is clearly inspired by the classic wood found on the Atari 2600, and the new console features ribbed lines, a raised back, and a front panel that can either be glass or wood. The interesting part is that the company hints that this console can deliver "current gaming content".

"Those ports suggest modern internal specs" claims Atari. A model with a classic wood-fronted design, and a sleeker, but still retro-chic, red and black edition. Atari has said it isn't deliberately being teasing, but rather wants to make sure it gets things right. We'll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride!
