Auto racing notebook: Truex gets New Hampshire pole after Larson fails inspection

Denny Hamlin celebrates first season win with the most spectacular burnout

Martin Truex Jr. moved into first place of the NASCAR Cup Series after Kyle Larson was penalized for a post-race inspection at Kentucky. Other short odds to win are Brad Keselowski (+275), Kyle Larson (+300) and William Byron (+900).

The Charlotte native, who leads the series with two wins, will attempt to notch another victory in Saturday's Overton's 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (4 p.m. ET on NBCSN). "I don't honestly know what it was that got us in trouble". The group previously had an alliance with Richard Childress Racing from 2010 to 2015 with Chevrolet as its manufacturer.

Matt DiBenedetto starts a season-best 17th.

Truex won last week's race at Kentucky while Larson finished second.

Seven-time series champ Jimmie Johnson rose to the second starting spot after Larson's penalty.

"In 2015, we kind of started to figure things out as a group and we just continued to keep building on that success and the momentum", Truex said on Friday.

There will be another new element in Sunday's race, which will be the first one at NHMS which will be run under NASCAR's new staging rules, which award drivers points for their standings in early parts of the race.

Almirola said in a statement that "when something gets taken away from you at a moment's notice like that, it has certainly made me appreciate my passion for racing and my desire to compete at this level".

It's yet to be known if Furniture Row will keep its second auto next year as Jones moves on to JGR.

"I know his plans originally were not for this team to be a one-year deal", Truex said. "We'll just have to see how it pans out". "He's been a good teammate".

What To Watch For: The last five NASCAR Xfinity Series races at New Hampshire have been won from the Coors Light Pole - a series record for any track.

The pole for Truex is his first of 2017 and 13th of his Cup career. "Love talking to him and hearing his point of view and things, so it would have been nice to have him for a couple years".
