Tony Blair: EU leaders are willing to 'accommodate' Britain in Brexit talks

He added: 'A lot of people supported us at the last election on the basis that voting Labour was a way of stopping Brexit or limiting the mandate that Theresa May had for Brexit.

Blair appeared to concede Corbyn presented a credible threat to the Tory government, especially after Labour's better than expected showing in the June 8 snap election, when the Conservative Party lost its majority in parliament.

The former Prime Minister admitted that "British people's attitude to Europe is ambivalent", following the poll conducted alongside Luntz Global Partners.

Blair suggested the "will of the British people" on Brexit may be changing, and leaders should "at least lead a proper debate about the options before us".

He also warned Brexit had already done the United Kingdom a significant amount of economic and political "damage".

"On any basis, leaving is complex and will take years". But he called Brexit the biggest political decision since World War II.

The former prime minister has been one of the most outspoken opponents of Brexit, and claims there is no evidence Britain "wants to pay a high economic price for Brexit".

Rachel Farr, senior lawyer in the employment, pensions and mobility group at law firm Taylor Wessing, said: "The Bill makes it clear that EU-derived United Kingdom legislation, such as TUPE 2006, will continue to apply after the exit day, whilst EU Regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation will also remain in effect in the UK. I wouldn't actually be believing those people who are set on destroying our attempts to leave who now appear as wolves in sheep's clothing". In March 2022, before the next general election, we would leave the European Economic Area and start our new life as an independent nation, in control of our money, our borders and our laws.

He told the Today programme: "Europe itself is now looking at its own reform programme. I'm not going to disclose conversations I've had within Europe, but I'm not saying this literally on the basis of a whim".

In a brief appearance alongside European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier as they began this week's talks, Mr Davis said there had been a good start to the process and it was time to get to the "substance of the matter".

'Secondly, I think although significant numbers of people for sure voted for him with enthusiasm, I think there were an terrible lot of people voted for him because they couldn't stomach the Tories and wanted to make a point.

Britain's Brexit secretary, David Davis, will be in Brussels on July 17 with his European Union counterpart, Michel Barnier, for four days of talks.

He noted that French and German voters share some of the concerns expressed by their British counterparts, particularly on immigration and concerns about the freedom of movement. This caused consternation in Brussels and Barnier replied: "I am not hearing any whistling, just a clock ticking".
