10 People Injured After Being Ejected From Boat in Indiana

A high-speed boating accident on Lake Gage Saturday evening injured several of the boat's 10 occupants, Indiana Conservation Officers said.

According to witnesses, 10 passengers were ejected from a boat and four people were seriously injured.

Ten people, including the driver, were injured after they were ejected from an out-of-control boat Saturday in a lake in Indiana.

The 21-foot-boat circled in the waters of Lake Gage, Indiana, at about 30mph per hour even after the operator and other people were thrown out and it rammed into a dock until two conservation officers got control of it.

Two people were flown via air ambulance to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with a skull fracture and a partial lower arm amputation.

In the video footage, the boat is seen racing around in circles as officers try to corral it. Others with less serious injuries were transported to Cameron Memorial Hospital in Angola.

The DNR officer jumped onto the runaway boat while both boats were still in motion.

That's when it slowed enough for IN conservation officer Jake Carlile to jump on board from a jet ski.

The incident, which happened just after 7pm, was all captured on camera as an unmanned runaway boat made a violent turn.

Carlile was able to toss a rope into the water and entangle the runaway boat's propellor, according to the press release. The boat then struck a dock and then struck the rear of the patrol boat and disabled the patrol boat's motor.

When the watercraft hit the patrol boat though, it slowed the engine, and one of the officers was able to hop aboard and stop the boat.

"One of the most important things for anybody out on the water during the summer is that obviously life jackets do not work unless you wear them and alcohol and water don't mix", said Carlile.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
