Jet Blast at St. Maarten's Seaside Airport Kills Tourist

A woman on vacation in the Caribbean is dead after she was knocked down by a jet blast near one of the worlds most unsafe beaches.

The woman was vacationing with her family when the incident occurred on Wednesday at around 6 p.m. local time, the report said.

Maho Beach is famous for the closeness it has to the runway - the fence is 50m from the beginning of the tarmac.

As an aircraft positions for takeoff, people will hold a fence while watching from behind the plane as it roars down the runway.

The 57-year-old, said to be from New Zealand, was seriously hurt in the incident at Princess Juliana International Airport in St Maarten yesterday, and succumbed to her injuries shortly afterwards, it was reported.

Director of tourism for the island of St Maarten Rolando Brison told the New Zealand Herald in a report on Thursday that he had spoken to the woman's family.

Sint Maarten is a popular destination for plane spotters, as the planes fly low over Maho Beach into the airport.

The authorities are urging the general public and visitors to the island to adhere to the warning signs.

'Many tourists come to the island to experience the thrills of the landing of approaching aircrafts flying low above their heads and the holding on to the airport fence and standing in the jet blast of large aircraft taking off.

Fearless tourists have also taken to holding onto the fence that separates the runway from the roadway next to the beach, despite a warning sign advising against getting too close. "Doing this is however extremely unsafe", it said.

The jet blast reportedly caused the woman to lose her balance, fall and slam her head on the nearby pavement.
