European Union wastes Turkey's time, Erdogan tells the BBC

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks during a news conference to present the outcome of the G20 leaders summit in Hamburg Germany

He said he had clearly told French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel: "No offence, but we will not pass it in our parliament as long as the promises made to us are not delivered". "We are comfortable", he said.

Asked whether he personally believed that Turkey would be better out of the EU, Erdogan said Turkish people's opinion of the bloc had changed over time. "If such worldwide combat is being conducted, then we want you [other countries] to extradite those [Gülenists] immediately, as we will also deprive them of their citizenships", he added.

Mr. Erdogan's critics say the president didn't win fairly.

"Despite all this we will continue being honest with the European Union for a little more time", he added.

"We are in a hurry to find a solution here".

In March the UN Human Rights Office published a report containing allegations of mass destruction, killings and human rights violations taking place in the south-east of Turkey between July 2015 and December 2016. "We are fed up with this", Erdogan said.

To the question of why more than a hundred journalists are imprisoned, he said: "Please let's not fool the world with these lies".

Members of global media are being hosted in Ankara by Turkey's Directorate General of Press and Information. "Just two actual journalists are in jail right now". "It was nothing less than an attempt at occupation", she said, slamming the move, spearheaded by the Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organisation (Feto).

Their detention raised alarm internationally, increasing fears that freedom of expression was being suppressed under Erdogan.

"No one is jailed because of journalism here".

A total of 2,431 members of the Turkish judiciary are also among those arrested in the aftermath of the July 15 coup attempt, while 265 of them are at large. More than 240 people have been killed after rogue soldiers commandeered tanks and fighter jets in an attempt to abduct and kill the Turkish president.
