First pitcher off the board: Cubs acquire Jose Quintana

The Chicago Cubs, scuffling and inconsistent since winning the World Series, acquired ace Jose Quintana from the White Sox on Thursday in a major trade between crosstown rivals. Obviously, part of that can be attributed to the fact that the White Sox now have the worst record in the American League at 38-49. Quintana's numbers on the season are underwhelming-he's 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA-but he's been his normal self since the beginning of June, inducing lots of bad contact, running up a 2.70 ERA, and generally being one of the few players worth watching on a godforsaken team.

Jose Quintana won't have to move this season, but it's not because he wasn't traded. He originally signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2013, and was the top prospect in the Cubs' farm system.

Quintana joins a staff that includes Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta, though the two star pitchers have struggled this season as both possess an ERA at 4.25 or higher and a WHIP of at least 1.30.

However, such a deal comes as no surprise as Quintana has served as one of the more notable trade chips from around the league this season. 21-year-old starter Dylan Cease ranked 83rd; he throws hard and supposedly has a great curveball. He's hitting.271 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and 23 runs in 42 games at Class-A Myrtle Beach this season.

Quintana is among the American League leaders in games started (tied for fifth) and strikeouts (tied for eighth). The Cubs selected him in the sixth round of the draft in 2014. Rose, 22, is batting.227 (53-for-233) with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and 38 RBI in 65 games with Myrtle Beach this season.

Flete, 24, is batting.305 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 70 games with Myrtle Beach this season.
