Froome keeps jersey despite Mollema win

Flecha breaks down stage 14 summit finish

Team Sky's Mikel Landa reveals how he and team-mate Chris Froome worked to keep a lid on Romain Bardet's ambitions on Tour de France stage 15.

Froome lost nearly a minute due to a damaged wheel before the climb of the Col de Peyra Taillade, presenting general classification rivals Fabio Aru (Astana) and Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) with a great opportunity.

After Nieve peeled off, Froome was forced to chase alone before Mikel Landa, pictured above, answered questions about his loyalty by dropping out of the lead group to finish the job, and Froome clung on as Bardet tried a brief attack before the summit.

The stage itself, a hilly trek through the Massif Centrale, was won by Holland's Bauke Mollema, going solo 30 kilometres from the finish. "I had to get back by the top of that climb or it was game over for me". They did so much for me. "And if you believe, you can go really, really far in your life, and I did that", Federer said.

Chris Froome suffered his second mechanical problem at a critical point during a stage. "I saw everybody was on the limit, and after the downhill, everybody kind of stalled", he said afterwards.

Australian Michael Matthews outpaced Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet in the final meters in Rodez, winning the stage 14 of the 104th Tour de France. But the French have been [going] so well [with] the stage wins and Bardet fighting for the win. For everything he has accomplished, for all the bright lights and big settings to which he's become accustomed, the guy whom many have labeled the greatest of all time admits to feeling heavy legs and jumbled thoughts at important on-court moments to this day.

As a result, the top of the overall standings remains unchanged, Froome leading by 18 seconds from Astana's Fabio Aru with Bardet a further seven seconds back. He struggled badly on Thursday's Pyrenean stage, falling out of overall contention and when he was dropped early on Friday by the peloton, he made a decision to call it quits.

He started the day six seconds ahead of the three-time champion but, before yesterday's 15th stage, trailed Froome by 18 seconds after coming home 30th overall, 25sec behind stage 14 victor Michael Matthews of Team Sunweb. "Yates attacked on the climb [after Froome rejoined the group] ... he kind of stalled and I was a bit afraid ... there were many teammates left [of other riders] ... an Agr2r rider and Landa was there for Chris [Froome]". "After the last ascent, I noticed how exhausted everyone was and how they kept looking at each other, so I said to give it a try".

I prefer to be ahead on GC at this point than having to make up time. "For now, I'm just happy to have the jersey and to have a rest day tomorrow." he added.
