Game of Thrones Showrunners Explain "That's Not You" Arya Line

As the showrunners explained in the "Inside the Episode", the "That's not you" line was a callback to "Game of Thrones" Season 1.

As many fans predicted, Arya Stark reunited with her direwolf Nymeria in this week's "Stormborn" episode of Game of Thrones. Nymeria has her pack now, one she wouldn't leave for Arya, or for anyone.

And others thought she'd finally track down Nymiria, the direwolf Arya was given in season one.

He explained that Jon Snow was with Sansa in Winterfell and that the youngest Stark girl should probably head home. But to stick to the story, episode writer Bryan Cogman says that Arya and Nymeria may have reached a point of no return in their relationship. As EW points out, the show doesn't show the direwolves very often in part because they're hard to convincingly render - we know what wolves look like, unlike dragons, so the team has to expend more resources to get them to look realistic. "That's why "#Game of Thrones" showrunners Davide Benioff and D.B. Weiss made a decision to explain it. She entreats Nymeria to come with her on her journey home to Winterfell, but the wolf declines by retreating into the trees and sparing Arya's life.

The direwolf finds her old mistress in the woods and confronts her.

Arya comes face to face with her old pal. "No, that's not me", Arya told her father back then.

"Arya's not domesticated and it makes total sense her wolf wouldn't be either". Once the wolf walks away, at first she's heartbroken to have come this close. Since in the books Nymeria is reported to be leading hundreds of wolves, there is no doubt Martin was talking about Arya's direwolf back then. Even if Arya had headed north to Winterfell, she would have just missed Jon, as he is heading south to Dragonstone to meet with Daenerys Targaryen. The late, great Stark once told his daughter that she'd be a lady of a castle one day ― that she'd marry a lord in a "nice frilly dress" ― to which Arya responded passionately: "No, that's not me". "Nymeria has created her own world and created her own pack and isn't ready to be Arya's pet".

Viewers couldn't contain themselves when the young warrior found her childhood pet after years apart - only for the wolf to turn its back on her.
