The attacker appears to have swum from a nearby public beach to gain access to the resort, officials say.

Egypt's tourism industry, a main source of national income, has been in the doldrums since the 2011 uprising against long-time dictator Hosny Mubarak.

Earlier on Friday, five security personnel were killed when militants opened fire randomly on a checkpoint in the Egyptian province of Giza.

The information has not been officially confirmed by the Egyptian authorities.

Terrorists have recently started to target the Coptic minority and their churches across the country via bombings that killed dozens of them since late December 2016.

According to Egypt's Ministry of Tourism, the number of tourists in the first third of 2017 increased by nearly 50 percent compared to a year ago.

Their nationalities were not immediately clear, but at least one of the tourists is a dual Ukrainian-Russian national, according to Russian media citing the consulate in Egypt.

Six tourists have been wounded by a man with a knife in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, according to Egypt's Interior Ministry. Security forces shot both attackers, killing one and wounding the other before arresting him.

The perpetrator of a knife attack on tourists in Hurghada, was a native of Egypt and probably acted on the instructions of the "Islamic state".

The shadowy group Hasm, believed to be affiliated to the banned Muslim Brotherhood, has claimed responsibility for similar attacks.

The army later claimed it killed 40 militants in raids.

In the past two weeks, the Egyptian Coptic Christian temples have been targeted by terrorist attacks, therefore the religious leadership has made a decision to suspend their weekend liturgies. "They are not the ones wanted".
