Peter Smith Obituary

He died at the Aspen Suites in Rochester, which the report characterized as a "hotel used nearly exclusively by Mayo Clinic patients and relatives". An associate of Mr. Smith said.

Mr. Smith's body was found by a hotel clerk in the Aspen Suites hotel, located across the street from the Mayo Clinic, according to a Rochester Police Department report.

Smith also apologized to the authorities and attributed his final decision to a "recent bad turn in health", according to the records cited by the Tribune, which also claimed his $5 million life insurance policy was close to expiring.

No information was given about the 81-year-old's death in his obituary, and the coroner in Lake County, Minn., where he lived, told the Daily News at the time that it uncharacteristically did not have records about his death.

The cause of Smith's death had previously been a mystery, though it was widely assumed he had died of natural causes.

'When I got there and saw the tank, I thought, "I've seen this before", and was able to put two and two together, ' the employee told the Tribune under the condition of anonymity. Wednesday, when reached by the Tribune, Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson said Smith's method of choice was "unusual".

Matt Tait, a security researcher who Smith attempted to recruit to his effort, said in a blog that it "was immediately apparent that Smith was both well connected within the top echelons of the campaign and he seemed to know both Lt. Gen. Flynn and his son well".

He also implied he was working with Mike Flynn, the disgraced former General Trump made his national security adviser before he was forced to resign. "NO FOUL PLAY WHATSOEVER", read a suicide note left behind at the scene.

The Journal said Flynn did not respond to requests, the White House declined comment, and the campaign said Smith never worked for it and that any such action undertaken by Flynn, if true, was not on its behalf.

Peter Smith killed himself days after he was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal where he claimed to be working with Russian hackers to retrieve some 33,000 deleted Clinton emails and pass them to Michael Flynn, a former campaign adviser to Donald Trump.
