Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley in Washington on September 20, 2016.

The announcement comes just one day after emails were released by Donald Trump Jr. showing interest in receiving damaging information about Hillary Clinton from the Russian government.

"We will subpoena him if necessary", Grassley said of Manafort during a conference call with reporters Wednesday.

Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said Manafort would be subpoenaed if necessary and could be questioned on anything including his presence in a June 2016 meeting in NY involving the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., and a Russian lawyer, the Des Moines Register said.

Manafort ran Trump's campaign from March to August of 2016 before resigning amid news reports that he received illegal payments for lobbying work in the Ukraine, where he worked for a prime minister who had close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a different part of the article, The New York Times states that three people claimed email of Robert Glodstone, a music publicist representing Russian pop star Emin Agalarov, indicated the Russian government as the source of the information offered to Donald Trump Jr.

Grassley said Wednesday that he's asked the departments of Homeland Security and State how Veselnitskaya could be in the United States without registering under the foreign agents act or on a valid visa.

"My motive for bringing him in is because of other involvement with whether or not the Foreign Agents Registration Act has been adequately enforced by this administration and the Obama administration", Grassley said.

While Grassley spoke with reporters Wednesday morning, the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for Federal Bureau of Investigation director nominee Christopher Wray was in session. Veselnitskaya herself denied any connection to the Kremlin, said she did not request a meeting with Trump Jr. during the 2016 presidential campaign, and noted that she has no information damaging Clinton.
