Harvard Proposal Would Ban Final Clubs, Sororities And Fraternities

The committee recommended the ban in order to "cease to have a pernicious influence of undergraduate life". While fraternities are formally recognized by the university, final clubs are not officially associated with the institution and are frequently more exclusive than fraternities themselves. Some of the groups have been around campus for decades, including the Porcellian Club, which counts President Theodore Roosevelt as one of its pervious members. A final policy is expected to be discussed during the fall semester, to be approved or rejected by President Faust, reports the Washington Post. At the time, a college-wide report found that 47% of female seniors participating in gender-exclusive clubs experienced some form of non-consensual sexual contact, compared to about 31% of all female seniors at Harvard.

For years, Harvard's administration has sought to crack down on secretive all-male social clubs that are known on campus as "final clubs".

A separate Harvard committee reported in March that members of the clubs have "deeply misogynistic attitudes" and a "sense of sexual entitlement".

If the college were to adopt that policy, students who enroll in the fall 2018 or later would face discipline.

The idea would be to eliminate the groups by punishing students who participate.

Why do these folks want to curtail the freedom of students to associate as they see fit?

The proposal goes beyond an earlier rule that was announced a year ago barring members of single-gender groups from serving as sports captains or leaders of other campus groups. Amid pushback on its first anti-final-club policy, which was released a year ago, Harvard convened this committee to rethink the policy.

According to Greek Rank, there are five fraternities in Harvard.

The faculty group said by doing so, the university would follow other universities that have banned such groups all together, such as Williams College and Bowdoin College. More recently, some schools have banned alcohol at fraternity parties following student deaths.

Harvard University is considering taking extreme measures to change its undergraduate social scene.

A 22-page report on the situation from The Harvard Crimson reveals the thought process behind the committee's move, which suggested that organizations that arrange around a single gender are both outdated and inherently opprobrious: "The Committee's deliberations were carried out under the shadow of tragic events related to hazing and excessive drinking at other campuses across America". "The Committee's recommendation is in part intended as a preventative step".
