How will Brexit Britain untangle its legal ties with the EU?

The Brexit secretary David Davis on Thursday published the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill, formerly known as "The Great Repeal Bill".

Mike Russell said legislation to transpose all European Union law applying to the United Kingdom into domestic law would require the consent of the Scottish Parliament, where the majority of MSPs are against it. Mr Russell said: "A piece of legislation such as Theresa May is now promising, this Great Repeal Act, will require the approval of the Scottish Parliament".

Liberal Democrats leader Tim Farron also cautioned the government that the attempt to pass the bill through Parliament would be "hell".

But overhauling more than four decades of legislation through scrapping the 1972 European Communities Act is no small task, with opposition parties are already planning amendments to the bill. It will also seek to convert all European Union requirements into British law as soon as the United Kingdom exits the bloc.

"The eyes of the country are on us and I will work with anyone to achieve this goal and shape a new future for our country". That is what the British people voted for and it is exactly what we will do - ensure that the decisions that affect our lives are taken here in the UK.

However, in a joint statement, Nicola Sturgeon and Carwyn Jones called the bill an "attack on the founding principles of devolution" and threatened to vote against a consent motion which is expected to go before the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly early next year. If you found the Article 50 Bill hard, you should be under no illusion, this will be hell.

"Concerns have been raised as to whether changes to European Union law could put workers" rights and environmental standards, which had protections under European Union law, at risk.

"We are determined to ensure that the right approach is taken, and this is all about protecting the rights of citizens in Britain".

The government also fleshed out its negotiating stance with the EU, publishing three position papers which underlined that Britain would quit nuclear body Euratom and leave the jursidiction of the European Court of Justice.

One will cover nuclear materials and safeguards issues and will be studied closely by opposition parties and Tory MPs who have expressed concerns about the Government's commitment to leaving Euratom, Europe's civil nuclear regulator.

The other two papers will cover ongoing judicial and administrative proceedings, and privileges and immunities.

For Jeremy Corbyn on Thursday, the answer seemed to be Arsenal Football Club, whose jersey the Labour leader brought to Brussels as a gift for EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

Hundreds of thousands of children left in limbo over their residency status after Brexit must not be used as bargaining chips in the negotiations, the children's commissioner for England has warned Brussels.

But shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer has made clear Labour would not support the Bill in its current form.

That widespread "Henry VIII" powers contained within the bill allowing the government to rewrite decades of United Kingdom law are restricted.

Mr Mundell said he hoped a "range of powers and responsibilities" could be devolved "immediately" after Brexit.

The Bill will incorporate existing European Union environmental law into United Kingdom law and, as such, is meant to give certainty and continuity to business and organisations.
