IBM touts full data encryption in new Z series mainframes

3-times faster I/O and accelerated transaction processing (compared to the z13).

And the firm further noted that IBM Z was being introduced to the IBM Cloud as an encryption engine to run IBM Blockchain services in data centres worldwide (Dallas, London, Frankfurt, Sao Paolo, Tokyo and Toronto).

"The powerful combination of IBM Z encryption and secure containers differentiates IBM Blockchain services on the cloud by supporting the trust models new blockchain networks require", said Marie Wieck, general manager, IBM Blockchain.

The bulk encryption at cloud scale is made possible by an increase of seven in cryptographic performance over the previous generation z13 - driven by a increase in silicon dedicated to cryptographic algorithms.

IBM is betting big on pervasive encryption with a new mainframe dubbed IBM Z that may land new workloads amid data breaches.

And indeed when it comes to the vast majority of nine billion data records which have been breached over the past half a decade, only 4% were encrypted.

At the moment, 92 of the world's top 100 banks rely on the IBM mainframe because of its ability to efficiently process huge volumes of transactions. The z14 encrypts data 18x faster than compared x86 platforms, at 5 per cent of the cost.

IBM Z allows organisations to encrypt the application programming interfaces (APIs) used to call data from a cloud service, for an additional layer of security, IBM said.

Overall, IBM said, the new Z system offers a 35 percent increase in capacity for traditional computing workloads and a 50 percent jump for Linux workloads compared with the z13.

The next-generation mainframe, called the IBM Z, is capable of handling 12 billion encrypted transactions a day, meaning businesses can encrypt all the data associated with an application, cloud service or database.

The timing is handy given the surge in data breaches and regulations such as the EU's General Data Protection Regulation.

All that said, it's probably going to take more than total encryption for a company to spring for a mainframe unless it's core to their business, according to analyst Roger L. Kay from the firm, Endpoint Technologies Associates, Inc. It also has three times the memory at 32TB. IBM's key management system hardware causes keys to self-destruct in response to intrusions, and they are then reconstituted after the intrusion, the company said.

1 000 concurrent NoSQL databases.

As part of the announcement, IBM also previewed new z/OS software that provides foundational capabilities for private cloud service delivery, enabling a transformation from an IT cost center to a value-generating service provider.

There is coming z/OS software that will provide capabilities for private cloud service delivery, that will include support of workflow extensions for IBM Cloud Provisioning and Management for z/OS and real-time SMF analytics infrastructure support.

IBM mainfraes already support 87% of all credit card transactions and almost $8-trillion payments a year, 29-billion ATM transactions each year, worth almost $5-billion per day, 4-billion passenger flights each year; more than 30-billion transactions per day - more than the number of Google searches every day; and 68% of the world's production workloads at only 6% of the total IT cost.

The company expects to ship the mainframe in the third quarter.
