IPhone 8 Could Feature Rear-Facing 3D Sensor For Augmented Reality

Apple’s billion devices give augmented reality edge over Google

Citing a source familiar with Apple's plans, Fast Company reports that Apple's iPhone 8 will incorporate an advanced system of 3D lasers on the back created to enhance the user experience when running augmented reality apps. Nonetheless, given the big push Apple appears intent on making into the Augmented Reality space, it stands to reason that Apple will do everything it can to ensure that the feature is ready to go in time for the iPhone 8 launch. These details and many others have come from "a source with knowledge of the situation", according to the news site.

Now as to when Apple will officially release the iPhone 8, that remains subject to a number of conflicting reports. Bank of America Merrill Lynch is the latest financial firm to predict that Apple's tenth anniversary iPhone might not be ready before its release date. Lumentum (LITE), Finisar (FNSR) and II-VI will provide the VCSEL systems to Apple. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (who is usually accurate on iPhone plans) believes the iPhone 8 front-facing camera will use a laser for 3D selfie effects and to recognize the user's face for authentication purposes. The whole thing costs about $2 per phone, our source says. As per earlier reports, Apple is planning on embedding the Touch ID sensor into the OLED display panel of the iPhone 8.

This means even though Apple employees are working hard, we may not see the laser system in this year's edition of iPhone. Furthermore, design leaks of the iPhone 8 appear to confirm a vertically aligned dual-lens module, suggesting that Apple is indeed going to put emphasis on AR when its new smartphone arrives. Also, the authenticity of this information as questionable since it comes from unofficial sources.
