Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis left talks with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Washington June 26

Since January 2016, when the JCPOA took effect, the International Atomic Energy Organization, which monitors the technical implementation of the deal, has in numerous reports confirmed Iran's compliance.

Speaking on the second anniversary of the major nuclear deal signed on July 14th, 2015 at the UN Security Council, Zarif also criticized the US's failure to uphold the "spirit" of the agreement recently, by "not allowing Iran to enjoy the full benefits of the nuclear deal". In return, tough worldwide sanctions that had crippled Iran's economy were eased.

The official stressed U.S. adherence to the nuclear deal "will ensure that Iran is held strictly accountable to its requirements" until this review is completed.

US President Donald Trump is "very likely" to state that Iran is adhering to its nuclear agreement although he continues to have reservations about it, a senior US official said on Thursday.

Even opponents of the deal such as Mark Dubowitz, the chief executive of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the agreement "has partially and only temporarily succeeded in pushing Iran's nuclear breakout time from a couple of months to one year".

"The Treasury Department has final approval over these kinds of deals with Iran, and some members of the Trump administration hope that Secretary Steve Mnuchin will use this authority to scuttle those agreements".

While he has not carried out that threat, his administration is conducting a "review" to see whether the provision of sanctions relief to Iran - a USA commitment under the deal - is in America's "national interest".

Mr Vaez added that "the administration probably prefers to kill it with a thousand paper cuts, so that the blame game is muddy". The International Atomic Energy Agency and United Nations have stated that the Islamic Republic is complying with the agreement, as many U.S. congressmen, especially those in Trump's republican party, have been accused of politicizing the deal, alleging Tehran's links to sanctioned individuals or groups designated on its "terrorist" lists.

"We believe that the United States officials should revise the way they treat the agreement because otherwise they are not helping to let the agreement survive", said the Iranian foreign minister. In Washington, the biggest resistance to the deal comes from the US Congress.

"The worst deal I think I've ever seen negotiated that you started is the Iran deal".
