Carter was in Winnipeg for Habitat for Humanity, a week-long event where volunteers build homes for local families.

Former President Jimmy Carter became dehydrated while working at a Habitat for Humanity site in Winnipeg on Thursday.

"He has been taken off-site for observation".

A spokesperson for the Habitat for Humanity said all additional updates would be coming from the Carter Center in Atlanta. It left the site, followed by Carter's motorcade, which is now parked outside the emergency doors at St. Boniface Hospital.

Carter was president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

"He's asked us to continue with our day", said Jonathan Reckford, CEO for Habitat for Humanity International.

They will be in Winnipeg for two days taking part in a building blitz of 25 new homes in the province.

Two years ago, former President Jimmy Carter announced to the world that he was battling cancer.
